A Word

Listening Prayer Scripture Passages-Lectio Divina

We gather each Wednesday evening to attend to the Lord through listening, worship and prayer. All are welcomed to come. A passage of Scripture is selected each week, and we listen to the text read aloud slowly, three times. Participants are invited to notice a word, phrase or image which arises out of their meditation on the text. We enter a time of silence and solitude to reflect, journal and converse with the Lord about what was heard. It is a time where God's story and our own story intersect. Later, we re-gather and listen to one another share out of one's own experience. The text (A Word) becomes quite alive within and transforms us through the work of the Holy Spirit and this gentle process. If you are unable to join us in person, we invite you to pray along with us each week through these pages. Others print out these pages to gather around the Word in small groups to experience Christ's presence together and deepen in a shared spiritual life together. You are welcome to comment on your own experience with A Word.

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

August 23, 2012

John 13:1-17
Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

My Sheep Listen

Dressed in a New Wardrobe

Colossians 3:9-14 The Message
Dressed in a New Wardrobe

Don’t lie to one another. You’re done with that old life. It’s like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you’ve stripped off and put in the fire. Now you’re dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete. Words like Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and irreligious, insider and outsider, uncivilized and uncouth, slave and free, mean nothing. From now on everyone is defined by Christ, everyone is included in Christ.

Patience and Endurance

James 5:7-9
Patience and Endurance

7 Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord’s return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen. 8 You, too, must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.

What We Trust In

2 Corinthians 4:5-12 What We Trust In
The Message

Remember, our Message is not about ourselves; we’re proclaiming Jesus Christ, the Master. All we are is messengers, errand runners from Jesus for you. It started when God said, “Light up the darkness!” and our lives filled up with light as we saw and understood God in the face of Christ, all bright and beautiful.
