a quiet space to listen and experience hope, healing and wholeness with God

Sounds of Freedom

December 30, 2015

Again this Christmas, we celebrated the coming of Jesus and we remember again the purpose of his coming: to restore us back to God. In this Psalm, we are given a front row seat to hear the voices of a people who are freed from captivity and brought back home to God. Let us find our own voice within this crowd and join the cry for freedom.

Words of Comfort

December 9, 2015

Spoken tenderly, God's voice comforts and calms us in times of abandonment, distress, fear, shame and sadness. The One who comes to dwell with us calls us home and holds us close. This is the Voice we are listening for, the One who knows us intimately by name. This is Good News for all people.

In this season of Advent, you are invited to be still and listen to how God's tender words are coming to you.

Friends

November 18, 2015

Shared confidences, shared burdens, story, history, being known, respect, honor, joy, delight, love, forgiveness, solace, mutual: these are the words of friendship. As you enter this time of prayer, listen to God's invitation to friendship - even in the midst of pain, trouble, fear and shame.

Hope of Glory

October 28, 2015

To them (and us) God has chosen to make known
among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery,
which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Colossians 1:27

The Hebrew word for glory is kabod and it's root signifies "weighty", that is, something of real substance. God's glory is more to be contemplated and experienced than to be comprehended analytically.

Consider the weightiness of Christ in you, the hope of glory as you meditate on this Psalm.

To the praise of His glory...

A Shared Gaze

October 7, 2015

The mountains in our lives can seem like permanently immovable obstacles on our journey to live into the abundant life. Yet perhaps they are the very thing which prompts our gaze to shift. The mountains invite us to look up; to see them and to see beyond them.

Thankfully, there is One who is ever seeing us. whose loving gaze is always upon us. God sees us long before we see God. What might it be like meet God's gaze today and mutually share in it together? Even for a moment.

Slow down a task today, and consider God's gaze upon you as you are in it. Soak in God's pleasure.

Our Fight Song

September 2, 2015

Our fight song sounds much different from the popular methods of the world for we do not battle in the flesh. There is One who fights for us. As we learn to be still, pray, trust, speak truth, worship and dwell with God, we experience God doing battle on our behalf.

For many, this is a go-to Psalm for spiritual battle, oppression and contending prayer. Learn this song, and sing it often.

His faithful promises are your armor and protection.

Finding Home

August 19, 2015

Years ago, God used a friend to open my eyes to the story of  Moses and the Burning Bush in an entirely new way. As Moses observed a strange sight and moved towards the bush which would not burn up, God invited Moses to take off his sandals for where he was standing was holy ground (Exodus 3). In the culture of the Hebrew people, known for their hospitality to strangers, taking off one's shoes was a sign of being welcomed home. God extends that same hospitality to Moses, calling him by name and essentially saying, "you are welcomed to be at home with me". Moses responds with reverence, fear and by hiding his face. What a picture of our own response to God's invitations!

Consider this story as you pray with Psalm 84. What is it like to find your home with God? God bids you, "come, you are welcome home with me".

God's Loyal Love

God’s Loyal Love

        God
        Of all,
        Divine
        Spirit of our
        Lives,
        Only
        You
        Are
        Loyal
        Love.
        Only You
forgiVe our guilt as far as the
        East is from the West.

Liberation Comes

December 16, 2015

Isaiah reminds us poignantly that the "tidings of comfort and joy" proclaimed by the angels to the shepherds includes the promise of physical and spiritual liberation. This promise of freedom extends to all people: the poor, the brokenhearted, the captive prisoner, and the mourner.

Can we possibly imagine and join with Jesus in the liberation of our own hearts and those of our families, our neighborhoods, our cities?

Come, Lord Jesus. Come. Revive us again.

Living Large

November 25, 2015

Psalm 138, a resounding "thank you" to God, reminds us again just how good the Good News truly is. God is ever the initiator. And we always have the choice of our response. The moment we accept God's invitation by calling out, God steps in and "makes our life large with strength" (TMG).

May you be encouraged by these words of testimony spoken by those around the table:

"It's so no all up to me"
"The Lord will work out his plans for my life - I'm resting in that"
"Thank you God for cutting off this shackle in my life"
"Both hands hold me"
"I really like being alive in Christ"
"For me it used to be that if it was not all good, it's not good. Now I am thankful"
"I'm anticipating the Advent of God's grace afresh this year"
"I can fall and rest in God's presence"

May the Spirit meet you as you dwell with Psalm 138.

Holding on to God's Hand

November 11, 2015

Bring all your senses into this time of prayer.

In a safe place, allow God to take you by the hand and tenderly show you God’s ways of mercy, love and truth. Notice how God’s hand feels. Is there a safe place you would like God to take you? Where are God’s ways of mercy, love and truth intersecting with your life? Enjoy God’s gracious company. Is there a particular member of the Trinity whose company you are most drawn to today?

Be at rest in God’s company. Take your shoes off. You are home.

God Leadeth Me

October 14, 2015

Sometimes surprising, often times just-in-time, always faithful, God is leading us. Pause today, to consider and pray how God is guiding you.

What are you noticing in and around you?

Where do you notice love, or peace, or life-giving joy?
Where do love, peace or life-giving joy seem noticeably absent?

Both reflections, when done prayerfully with the help of the Holy Spirit and over a period of time, can provide clues to how God is guiding. Holy conversations with a soul friend or spiritual director, can help you listen, discern and recognize God's voice. As we grow in intimately knowing the Good Shepherd, we grow in trusting the Shepherd's voice.

"...the sheep hear his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out...My purpose is to give life in all its fullness. "  - Jesus, John 10

A Still and Quiet Soul

September 9, 2015

Strong bonds of attachment develop between a mother and nursing infant as the baby learns that her needs for safety, nourishment, being held, companionship, and care will be met. Especially important are the eyes brimming with loving delight that the baby sees in the eyes who see her. Deep inside her soul, she knows love. Her trust is the fruit of this knowing love. Together the mother and babe learn the dance of trust as the babe expresses her needs through cries and the mother learns to interpret them. As the infant matures the time will come when the mother and child begin the process of weaning. This too is a delicate dance and cannot be rushed. A contentedly calm, weaned child: still, quiet and resting in her mothers embrace is the fruit of the loving trust established between them.

The fruit of loving trust is a still and quiet soul.

Taste and See

August 26, 2015

Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy;
no shadow of shame will darken their faces.  Ps. 34:5

Could that which we taste and see actually bring this kind of joy and freedom? Surely, we are shaped and formed by what we give our senses to.

As you pray with this Psalm, ask the Holy Spirit to shift your gaze upon God and taste of God's presence in your circumstances right now. The good news is that God has the power to work this transformation of joy and freedom from shame in us.

Worthy of Rescue

August 12, 2015

It may be difficult to imagine being the object of someone's rescue....to be worthy of the effort and peril of rescue. Yet our God is waiting - waiting to hear the sound of our voice vulnerably calling out for help. At the end of our resources and unable to help ourselves...we cry out...and there is ONE who hears our cry and always responds in love.

This is a wonderful Psalm to pray with in community. Listen carefully to the stories of rescue offered by your community. The process of re-telling our rescue stories brings glory to God, enables us to overcome today's trials, and helps us remember and anchor into the faithfulness of God.
