Hope for Restoration

December 14, 2016

These words from Isaiah evoke a longing in us for restoration - to be back again in the garden with God as all was created and intended to be. This is the place where our soul longs to dwell and make its home with God. God has placed this hope in our hearts for what is to come and enables us to live in this hope right now, regardless of our circumstance.

As a new year is upon us, what are you hoping for? Who and what are you placing your hope in? And what hope for restoration has the Holy Spirit placed within you? May the Lord strengthen your hands and encourage you to stand so that you may walk upright in this hope placed within you.

Belonging to the Bridegroom

November 16, 2016

Have you had an experience where you knew deep within that you belonged to God? If you become real quiet, can you remember where you have most felt a sense of belonging? That your life mattered and you were wanted? Sometimes we do not have a storehouse of nurturing memories to draw from. It is helpful then to vulnerably trust the longing to belong which God has placed within us. Bring these consoling memories and longings into your prayer as you listen to the following passage. John's inner knowing of who he belonged to gave him great confidence to walk in humility and trust the Bridegroom's voice.

When Jesus Comes Towards Us

September 28, 2016

Unexpectedly, Jesus comes towards us often disguised in ways in which we cannot see him. Jesus comes to us in our place of need, yet sometimes we are desperately afraid of our true need. It is hard to imagine Jesus wanting to meet us somewhere we do not want to be. Still, he comes and descends gently upon us through his Spirit. Be still and rest in Christ's presence as you pray with John's testimony of Jesus coming towards him.

Near To The Father's Heart

September 14, 2016

The freedom to truly be a child -
dependent;
not responsible for anything too big for us;
to cry out for what we need, whether nourishment, physical comfort, protection or attention;
living in the moment with whatever captures our interest and attention;
to be seen through the eyes of love and simply delighted in;
- these are the gifts of being a child who lives near to the Father's heart.

Jesus, show us how to live near to our Abba's heart.

A Place of Great Abundance

August 3, 2016

The great teachers remind us that abundance is not situational, transactional, or a destination. Abundance is something which happens within us. The overflow of our heart is praise and gratitude to God. As you enter into prayer with this text, come and see what our God has done.
            Open our eyes God to see what you have done.

Waking the Dawn with Our Song

June 27, 2016

In a burst of heartfelt expression, Psalm 108 might compel us to consider the song in our own heart to God. Some people literally waken each morning with a song humming from somewhere deep inside the soul. These songs speak to the core of our longings, placed inside of us for ourselves and God. They might sound the purpose of our lives or provide anchoring from which we live out the day. Pause to listen each morning as you waken and notice the song lodged deep within your spirit. Linger in the gentle awaking of this song within. May it be fully released.

Our Hiding Place

June 1, 2016

The place we go to hide can become the place where we become found by God and find God for ourselves. It is a place where we can be seen and known with love and compassion, including the parts of ourselves we most want to hide from. As you find a quiet moment to listen to the words of Psalm 32, give them room to soak in like a softly falling rain.

Savoring Consolation

May 4, 2016

According to David, our lives are an open book to God, the one who compassionately formed us and made us. Our Father, our Abba, never takes the eyes off of us and is not afraid of the paradoxes, complexities and longings of our lives.
Consider reflecting, remembering, receiving and resting into the consolations God brings. This too is prayer. Savor God's goodness to you, demonstrated in ways unique to your life and design.

Only The Father Knows

November 30, 2016

The season of Advent reminds us to wait with intention.

Jesus' life, recorded in the Scripture gives us many clues as to what he was waiting and watching for. He consistently went off to be alone with his Father. He longed to be in the company of his father, to be at home with him. This text reminds us that there are some things which only the Father knows. We can either fear the Father's knowledge and how he will use it or we can imitate Jesus and draw close to the Father and listen to his heart. We can wonder. What might the Father know that he too longs for us to hear?

Involving Jesus in Our Shame

October 19, 2016

John chapter 2 begins with a dramatic scene of the miraculous: water stored within ceremonial vessels becomes wine. Astonishing! This story invites further exploration with its many layers of metaphors. It is rich with community, family, friends, cultural norms and customs with threads of shame woven through it. The text invites us to prayerfully place ourselves into the story and allow it to unfold and intermingle with the themes in our own story. What do you want Jesus to know about your shame? What might happen if we ask Jesus to become involved in our personal or communal shame? Listen in to what Jesus tells you.

Who Are You?

September 21, 2016

Who gets to name us?
Which voices and perspectives define our name and the core of who we are?

John the Baptizer lived for some time in the wilderness, which in Hebrew literally means that place where we go to hear God. There John grew in learning how to listen and recognize God's voice. John's voice and life continue to guide us in learning to listen and recognize the voice of Jesus. In our own places of wilderness we too come to listen for the Voice who knows our true name.

Bearing Witness

September 7, 2016

The privilege of every Christian is to bear witness to the Light of Christ. We are called to look with our eyes for the Light in others and in the world around us.
There is Light which we cannot see yet we can discern through our other senses:
listening with our ears and heart;
    touching and being touched;
          tasting and savoring;
                smelling the scent of compassionate love, grace, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness and gentleness.
                      knowing through the Holy Spirit dwelling within and quickening our spirits.

Let us continue to affirm the Light we notice to in one another...Christ in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27).

Taking Refuge

July 20, 2016

While gathered to listen, pray and worship in our new ministry space, a bald-headed eagle, perched high on a branch beside the edge of Lake Idlewild, kept watch over us for the entire evening. She gave us a compelling visual of God's attentive gaze and loving protection, and under whose wings we find refuge. Pause and savor the images which the Holy Spirit brings to mind as you dwell in this portion of text from Psalm 18.

Counseled By Loving Eyes

June 8, 2016

Counseled by loving eyes which look upon us with compassion
Eyes which say, "choose life"
Eyes that understand our deepest needs and fears
These eyes are not critical, cruel or cunning
They do not evoke fear of punishment
Rather they convey love, hope and kindness
Because of unfailing love, they delight in us learning to walk in the ways of life.

Turn again to see God's loving gaze upon you.

Our Thoughts

May 11, 2016

What do we do with those thoughts which come un-invited? Those oppressive or nagging thoughts which assail us?

As King David brings the song of Psalm 139 to a close, he demonstrates his own progression of self awareness and the contradictions, tensions and unresolved conflicts within his and our own hearts and minds. In the midst of that revelation, we are invited again to re-shift our gaze back onto the One who sees and knows us through the eyes of love. Let us keep turning and returning to God who has the power to transform our hearts, minds and actions, guiding us along the path of life.
